The Historic District
For the history buff, there is a wealth of knowledge and tradition in St. Augustine. Even before 1513 when Ponce de Leon discovered the Fountain of Youth and claimed it for Spain, there were large complex societies of Native Americans living in the St. Johns River area. Transport yourself to their world by taking an afternoon hike through nearby Favor-Dykes State Park and you will see mounds of oyster shells called midden.
